Reflux Disease
Often gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) can be treated medically. However in some instances medication and lifestyle changes do not adequately control GERD. In those patients, GERD surgery may be required.
Surgery may be indicated in those patients whose symptoms are not adequately controlled by medications, patients who can not afford or those who wish not to take medication on a chronic basis and those whose sphincter muscle does not work properly. Complications can occur if GERD is not adequately treated.
Preoperative evaluation for reflux disease may include esophagogastroduodenoscopy(EGD), pH monitoring and manometric and motility studies. These tests will help determine which patients will benefit from surgical management of this problem.
GERD surgery can be performed by either laparoscopic or open techniques. Our surgeons have extensive experience in both techniques, but the laparoscopic technique offers many advantages over the open technique. Dr. Gilliam first performed laparoscopic surgery for hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux in 1990 and consequently has a long standing experience in this technique that is unsurpassed.
