Colon Disease
Surgical diseases of the colon include benign and malignant colon tumors, diverticulosis and diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease(Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis) and other pathologic conditions. These illnesses are often able to be diagnosed by colonoscopy performed by our surgeons. The proper treatment course is then outlined to the patient and family.
There are two types of colon resection: open surgery and laparoscopic surgery. The choice of procedure depends on the diagnosis and the individual patient.
Open surgery is the standard procedure for colon resection. This involves an incision in the abdomen through which the diseased area of the colon is located and removed. Operating time generally takes 2 to 3 hours.
Laparoscopic colon surgery is a new technique that is gaining popularity. Advantages of the laparoscopic technique included a faster recovery, less postoperative pain and a quicker return to normal activities. Surgery generally last 2- 4 hours.
